Frequently asked questions
What is Unwritten?
A writing app for novels and big fictional worlds. You write in Markdown that renders as you type, and Unwritten keeps track of the rest: a story bible of characters, places, subplots and events; a timeline by in-story date; chapters in reading order with their plans; backlinks; and word counts.
Which devices does it run on?
Mac first; the beta is coming soon. iPad comes next. Both use the same vaults, synced through your ThrottleStack account. There’s no Windows or Android version yet.
Do I need a ThrottleStack account?
Yes. Unwritten keeps your vaults in your ThrottleStack account so they sync between your devices and stay backed up. ThrottleStack is Throttle Mountain’s app for projects, to-dos and time. “Sign in with ThrottleStack” opens your browser, so every sign-in method works, passkeys included.
Does it work offline?
Yes, all the time. Every vault lives on your device first, so you can write with no connection at all. Edits wait in a queue and sync when you’re back online. The status bar always says whether you’re synced, syncing, or how many edits are waiting.
What if I edit the same chapter on two devices?
Unwritten merges them. Changes to different paragraphs combine on their own. If both devices rewrote the same paragraph, Unwritten shows you both and you pick: keep mine, keep theirs, or edit them together. Nothing is thrown away, because every save is also a revision you can go back to.
Can I bring my Obsidian vault?
Yes. Drop the folder in. Unwritten reads your Markdown, [[wikilinks]], ![[embeds]], images and frontmatter as they are, and skips .obsidian and .trash. If a file already exists, it asks whether to skip it, replace it, or keep both.
Are my words locked in?
No. Your manuscript is plain Markdown. You can export a vault as a zip whenever you like and open it in any editor.
How do I sign Unwritten out of a device?
In ThrottleStack, open Settings → Security. Your Unwritten sessions are listed as “Unwritten · Mac” and “Unwritten · iPad”; sign out any of them from there.
Can I see my manuscript in ThrottleStack?
Yes. On a ThrottleStack project or category, choose “Link an Unwritten vault” in its Resources. The vault’s files show up there: the same files, not a copy. Unlinking only removes the link and never touches the vault.
Who makes Unwritten?
Throttle Mountain, a small independent studio. Questions, bugs and ideas all go to the same inbox: [email protected].
